Don Giovanni
The music is memorable, dramatic and enjoyable: from the seductive solo voices of the famous ‘Là ci darem la mano’ to the fabulous ensemble as Don Giovanni’s infatuated conquests, vengeful victims and their outraged relatives join forces for justice. And
retribution does finally come to Don Giovanni, a serial womanizer and a murderer, with the searing flames of Hell ready to engulf him. Two casts of singers bring together top interpreters of Mozart today – and their two conductors are similarly acclaimed.
La Fanciulla Del West
The California Gold Rush provides the setting for the tense story, sweeping music and lavish Royal Opera staging of Puccini’s ‘Wild West’ opera – with whisky and bar-room brawling, a suspicious sheriff and even the fateful turn of a hand of poker. At the centre is the romance between an outlaw in hiding, Dick Johnson, and the tough woman who saves his life, Minnie– presented with Puccini’s much-loved lyricism by star tenor José Cura as Dick Johnson opposite Eva-Maria Westbroek as his feisty, gun-toting heroine Minnie.
La Calisto
La Calisto is an absolute triumph of early opera, first seen in 1651 and now the first Cavalli opera ever to be performed by The Royal Opera. It has all the Baroque hallmarks of eloquent recitatives, sensuous arias and delightful dance rhythms combined with a witty story of comic sexual confusion between gods and mortals. The music alone makes this essential for opera fans, especially with a fine cast of singers under the acclaimed conductor Ivor Bolton, with The Monteverdi Continuo Ensemble and members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. David Alden’s production is visually arresting in its brilliantly coloured setsand costumes.
La Bohème
La Bohème is one of the most famously melodious and eternally popular of all operas and returns to The Royal Opera this autumn, but for only four performances. The carefree attitude of youth and the harsh realities of life are poignantly contrasted through the
tender affair of Mimì and Rodolfo, from the heights of first meeting through tothe tragic end.
Matilde di Shabran
Juan Diego Flórez blazed onto the stage with brilliant bel canto singing in Matilde di Shabran in Pesaro in 1996, then shot to worldwide stardom. Now Flórez’s stunning performance and a new Pesaro staging, with period costume, come to The Royal Opera, complemented by a galaxy of star singers under the baton of Carlo Rizzi. The music has all the classic exuberance of early Rossini, written in 1821 yet until recently an all-but-forgotten masterpiece.
Hänsel und Gretel
This brand new production by regular favourites Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser has their characteristic wit, a dash of deliciously black comedy. There is also visual and musical beauty from theSandman, Dew Fairy and a host of protective angels to brighten anything lurking in the darker corners. With Humperdinck’s tuneful score and this is as musically memorable and visually delightful as opera gets.
